International Trade & BLV
Export of U.S. dairy cattle and cattle products may become increasingly difficult as more countries attempt to maintain their BLV-free status or implement BLV eradication programs. Current European Union guidelines for embryo transfer from the U.S. to the EU require that embryos are collected from donor females which have spent the last six months in the exporting country within no more than two herds47. Each of these herds must have been free from clinical signs of enzootic bovine leukosis during the previous three years. Semen exported to the EU also must come from a herd officially free from BLV.
