Impact of BLV

Economic loss due to BLV comes from reduced milk production, cow longevity, international trade, and sale price when cattle with lymphoma are condemned at slaughter. Annual economic losses to the US dairy industry are estimated to be $285 million for producers and $240 million for consumers32; however, the subclinical impact of BLV infection on cow longevity is not included in these estimates. In addition to economic the economic impacts of BLV, there are potential animal welfare and public health concerns.
